LIMBO

(1958-1972)

Limbo was added post the removal of the Big Dipper. The giant Slide extension seemed to need a new housing around it, maybe for support? Whatever the reason, a concession building built up and surrounded the Giant Slide extension structure. Within it's space LIMBO was built.

Limbo appears to be late 50's Pretzel ride, but the facade and interior was pure George Whitney. He worked extensively with it's interior design. Limbo became his last contribution to Playland. Opening around the time of his death by George Jr.  Limbo had quite the unique facade.  In the era of Bill Tracy, a man who was redesigning the older dark rides with lavish facades and somewhat PG13 interior scenes.... Limbo held its' own!

The facade was constructed by a group of local Italian artisans. Crouching Skeleton with the promise of hellish demons in a background display made up the frontage of the facade. It that wasn't creepy enough a blood dripping witch  paired with baby heads on spikes, greeted overhead as you entered. Wow!

Surprisingly, the exterior might of been better than the interior.  Black Light scenes with a few moving props and lights. Mostly dark with flashes of ghoulish scenes or death, dismembering, ghouls, demons and then space and aliens. Quite the schizophrenic interior.
