South Esplanade

(Cabrillo to Fulton)

This area was pretty much barren until an Ostrich Farm  (1895) and Sheehan's Tavern (1895) opened. The Ostrich's moved on. Sheehan's Tavern went on to become Billow's a notorious Speakeasy.. later Splendid Inn.
The South esplanade became the genesis of what became Chutes at the Beach and later Playland at the Beach.  Arthur Looff built his Carousel close to Cabrillo and a year later Concession owner John Freidle met.... their meeting created a partnership that formed Chutes at the Beach and many of our Playland memories were created by these men....
